Dr. Yezdani (Fire Records) “Believes” He Can Put an End to Torrents & P2P

August 30, 2009

Music Piracy has been an issue not only in Pakistan but through out the world even in the countries where the laws and rules have been far better and stronger. In an era where content sharing has become an accepted norm of the society, Dr. Yezdani does not only plan to focus his energy on stopping the piracy through websites but also targets the peer to peer (p2p) content sharing including torrents, limewire etc. He also believes

after a month or so if one would transfer music by p2p their email account will be frozen

No doubt, Dr. Yezdani has got a great sense of humor, he definitely made my day by saying that. Besides, would he ever imprison his son because he blue-toothed a song to his friend? that also comes under content-sharing.

Let’s talk about torrents first. The Pirate Bay, is the largest bit torrent tracker operating since 2003. Multiple attempts have been made to close down TPB but the maximum downtime till now has been “three days”. Four days back, 25th of August was the day when yet another atempt was made to bring it down by the Swedish court, while TPB took only “3 hours” to come back. Next morning, the responsible authorities for the 3 hours downtime were greeted with a beautiful T-shirt 🙂 Beautiful enough, that I’d love to buy one.

While, TPB is just one website, there are thousands such torrent trackers and websites. The downtimes for sites like TPB cause traffic spikes for other torrent websites, encouraging others to create more sites to enjoy the traffic spikes.

Let’s suppose Dr. Yezdani is powerful enough to do what governments and courts at USA and Sweden couldn’t do. What about the content sharing sites like Rapidshare, Mediafire, 4shared and thousands others some of them operating in the countries like Russia (http://yabadaba.ru/) where no piracy laws apply. The content on such sharing sites is “user-submitted” and can’t be “challenged”. The TOS states

We decline all responsibility for the contents of the materials stored by users. Each and every user is solely responsible for all materials uploaded to his account.

With policies and terms like these, the matter can’t be treated under the law and service can’t be closed.

Let’s discuss the point where he stated about e-mail addresses getting frozen in a “month” or so. The month has almost been passed, the email addresses just work fine. If he insists we can discuss this on support forums of leading e-mail service providers like GMail or Hotmail and enjoy the humorous discussion and comments. Besides, I can wait for all the time in the world to witness if this comes true ever.

Since piracy is a major issue and the problem has to be solved what should be the solution? Earlier, Rafey presented his imaginary business model which could be taken in consideration. Even if it isn’t taken in consideration the solution to the problem is an “alternate business model”.

In a discussion with Dr. Yezdani, Rohail Hyatt firmly believed that it is really important to move forward to the new business model for the music because stopping music piracy to the level of peer to peer is not just possible.

For all those who think I firmly believe in piracy, I don’t. I believe in truths, facts & reality. The content and articles from this website gets copied all the time and I am also one of the victims whose content is being stolen. I’ve embraced it like all others, since nothing much can be done about this except request of removal or source.
