An Irish bands tribute to Javed Miandad

October 4, 2009

Here’s a fantabulous piece of news. An Irish band called The Duckworth Lewis Method (named after the famous cricketing brains whose mathematical formulae for rain-disrupted matches are a can of worms for many) has come out with an album that’s a homage to the game of cricket which in most parts of the world — especially in the US — is considered an enigmatic sport that can bore you to death. That’s exactly what the band (comprising Neil Hannon and Thomas Walsh) intends to demystify with the 40-minute musical treat.

The album has songs that have more zing on them than a Shane Warne zooter and more revs than a Murlidaran doosra. The number that is particularly joyous to lend ears to is Meeting Mr Miandad, a tribute to the Pakistani master batsman. It is a pleasing song that will make you nod your head in rhythm and hum along with the lyrics: “Meeting Mr Miandad, when we get to Pakistan It’s historical, phantasmagorical destiny.”

It is heartening to note how our cricket legends are worshipped the world over.
