FreeStylers Co. are a Hip Hop and Rap act from Lahore. The group was founded by Syed Hashim Bukhari and later joined by Mubashir Naeem Butt. They have released well-received singles such as “Work That Body” and “Ay Mera Shair”.
Who thought the ancient Orkut could start such a musical journey?
FreeStylers Co. How did the group come about?
It was actually a ‘community’ on orkut for all the rappers from subcontinent to post their lyrics and freestyles and audios, started by Hashim and later joined by Mubashir. When Orkut died, and we had to start off our own band, we thought ‘hey, why not carry on the name?’
Hence, Freestylers Co.
Do you have any musical influences?
We have influences from many great musicians. Not just Pac, Biggie, Pun, Eminem and Ice Cube, but others like Bombay Rockers, Akon and basically anyone who makes good music. We are influenced by many underground artists too.
How is the Hip Hop scene in Pakistan and what are your views on it?
We think it’s a pretty long way for rap to go. The Hip Hop scene is good, but it’s slow. There are usually only a few couple of good rappers in each major city in Pakistan.
You combine a bit of Punjabi in your raps. Do you think it makes you stand out from other rap acts?
Well yes, and secondly, Punjabi is our own language, it’s easier to reach out to people when you communicate to them in their own language.
You released “Ay Mera Shair”, how has the feedback been like?
Aye Mera Shair was not a commercial song. It had a more hardcore flavour, hence the feedback was a lesser than Work That Body. But we had about some hundreds of downloads on just Koolmuzone.com
The lyrics ‘Three folks takin over the Pk’s rap scene’ is quiet a big term. Is that an honest statement?
Well, not boasting our bragging but we think we’ve earned our status to make this statement. We’re known in all major cities of Pakistan, Peshawar, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta and Karachi. I mean we ain’t there yet, who else has made this much progress in just one year?
The lyrics ‘Cuz baby loving me ain’t gonna hurt, But loving me is surely gonna make you squirt’ are quiet explicit. Have you had any criticism from lyrics like these?
This is what we made about two years back, so we’re a bit more mature now. Plus this was a diss track to some haters, and we had to make our point clear.
Your live performances look eccentric. What do you think?
Well yes, we think it’s a gift we have. Plus, it’s actually the highlight of a stage that adds this energy to us when we perform. We as a band are public property, it’s like our responsibility to entertain them to the fullest. This is our public service to them and earning respect and love is more important than earning money.
Have you got any upcoming gigs people should know about?
We recently performed alongside Atif Aslam, Amanat Ali and Jal (at the same night) at two different performances.

Many people don’t like rap music. What do you think of that?
We don’t believe that. Yes there aren’t many pure rap listeners, but everyone has somethin’ by 50 Cent, Eminem or Akon in their playlists. We believe some local rappers are earning rap a bad name, but we really hope to change your perception of rap.
Can we expect anything from FreeStylers Co. in this coming year?
Oh yeah, expect a video, great music and many performances! FSC isn’t stoppin!
