Lahore has always been termed as the cultural hub of the country and rightly so as it has given birth to some great artistic minds who have gone on to become worldwide figures in their respective fields. Apart from these individuals, the cultural activity of the city is also something that has always been a treat to witness but in the past, due to some unavoidable reason; it has come to a halt.

The live theatre is certainly one of those happenings in the city that was widely sought after and people used to attend it in large numbers.

The Good news is that some of the industry veterans together with several young minds are now once again gearing up to revive the theatrical scene of the cultural-capital, Lahore. The project is called ‘Weekend Theatre Festival’ and the organizers are going to hold 8 different theatre plays at different venues with in the city starting from 22nd of November.

Yesterday a press conference was held at the Lahore Press Club that included the organizers who threw light on their upcoming project. Few of the big names who are behind this ‘Weekend Theatre Festival’ include the veteran Irfan Khoosat, Sarmad Khoosat and Samya Mumtaz.

The cast of these plays also have some huge names as it will see the likes of Irfan Khoosat, Muhammad Qavi, Firdaus Jamal, Sania Saeed, Nauman Ejaz, Sarmad Khoosat, Nimra Bucha, and Naila Jafri just to name a few.

Talking to the press, the veteran actor Irfan khoosat said that they have come together in order to revive the traditional theatre which once used to be the identity of the city. But this time around these plays are going to have a modern touch to them and will cover diverse topics relating today’s world. Interestingly they are going to cover all this in 3 languages i.e. Urdu, Punjabi and English. The production team is said to be in talks with some well-known writers who will contribute to the script of these 8 plays including the famous Muhammad Hanif who is also the head of BBC Urdu.

Also present on the occasion was the film guru Mr. Syed Noor who really appreciated the efforts of the ‘Weekend Theatre Festival’ team and said that this will once again attract audiences towards the live stage.

It’s always good to see such little initiatives being taken to restore the liveliness of the city. This venture is most expected to do well with the local folks owing to the huge names that are on board. Keep checking this space for further information regarding ‘Weekend Theatre Festival’.
