Zeb and Haniya: Live music is a problem in Pakistan

MTV India‘s new music show called “MTV Roots” is a weekly show featuring artists/bands of South Asian origin from around the world. The launch episode of MTV Roots featured music videos of various South Asian artists including Mekaal Hasan Band. The main idea behind the show is to promote the bands of South Asia that are not so popular in India.

Zeb and Haniya who is soon going to be seen on MTV Roots, on the World Music Day, had a chat with their fans on MTV India’s twitter.

For all those who missed this fun-filled interaction, here are the excerpts:

Q: Which Indian artist do you listen to?

Haniya: “I’ve listen to a lot of Indian music. R.D. Burman, S.D. Burman, Madan Mohan right upto Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy!”

Music aids women in making bold moves

By Rehan Ansari

[Published in Canada’s leading daily newspaper, “The Globe and Mail”]

Zeb and Haniya challenge puritanical Taliban ethos to go outside gender, ethnic boundaries.

While the war trucks on in Pakistan, citizens are trying to go about their daily business. And some, such as two young women named Zebunnisa Bangash and Haniya Aslam, are even making bold moves outside their gender and ethnic boundaries.

Zeb and Haniya, as they are known, are Pathan, part of the Pashtun culture. To people in the Western world and even to those in Pakistan, the Pashtun are inextricably linked with the Taliban, and hence often demonized. The two women from Lahore, both 30, have chosen music as a creative outlet, something that goes against the puritanical Taliban ethos. In Peshawar, in the northwest of Pakistan, for instance, the Taliban violently and regularly intimidate musicians.

By

Madeeha Syed

Just when you thought it was all over, the music industry is abuzz with plans of album launches, collaborations, soundtracks, creative projects, the potential for solo projects by the likes of Rohail Hyatt and Co. In 2010, the music industry is slated to make a comeback with a vengeance

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan working on not one, but two albums!

The albums are slated for a late 2010 release but chances are that it could take till 2011 for his work to come out. One of the albums titled Koi Umeed will have four qawwalis, one of which – the title track – is a whopping 30 minutes long! It will contain poetry and bandish from Mirza Ghalib’s selected works. The selection of poetry and composition has been done by Mian Yousuf Salahuddin and those close to Rahat expect that this album will land him a place with the great maestros.

It doesn’t surprise us to know that Coke Studio has made waves internationally in as many places as we can think off. Paimona being a pushto/darri song had to top the afghan charts and so it did.

Zeb & Haniya said

Our Afghan friends tell us that Paimona (Coke Studio version) is topping charts in Afghanistan. How amazing is that? We’re both incredibly happy 😀

Zeb and Haniya: The Artists and their Music

zeb-haniya

Earlier this month, a certain bulletin caught my attention. ‘Zeb and Haniya, Pakistan’s first female duo, visit India.’ The Times of India was one of the first to feature them in their daily… after which every tabloid I turned to had them covered. Their names, place of birth, education background… and the inevitable questions about their plans in Bollywood (!) had indeed taken our media by storm.

Coke Studio – The hit parade

atif-aslam

Despite all of the sociopolitical and economic odds it faces, art serves not only as a breath of fresh air but also motivates those exposed to it. Recently, episode one of the second season of Coke Studio titled Individuality was aired on private networks across Pakistan, giving audiences a flavour of the music coming out of Pakistan’s biggest music collaborative venture.
