Song Info

Opening up a trove of Sufi Folk is Asad Abbas’ ‘Mahi Gal’. Based on the raag Miyan Ki Malhar, the song is an old folk melody that Asad grew up hearing in his home given that Eastern Classical music was something he had inherited in his lineage. He feels that while the melody has always been striking, it’s within the lyrics that the song finds its mettle. The song’s dreamscape composition finds a tale at play in what could be reminiscent of folklore storytelling. The song begins with an old, raw feel of a yearning to connect with the object of one’s Love. In this dream like state, the song trails into a change of tone and witnesses glimpses of the other side, as if Light at the end of the tunnel, culminating into a transition of raag by Fariha Pervez into a Tarana. And with this newfound reassurance, the song’s tone is returned to the original raag but uplifted, musically tipping into an upbeat bluesy feel with instrumental elements such as the Oud – demonstrating the passage of time over such an experience. A song with a theatrical trace, ‘Mahi Gal’ is one of intuition, reaching out to connect with the reality of a lucid dream and waking up to a new state of Truth.

Lyrics of Mahi Gal:

Language:

shaam payi muk aasaan gaiyaan
Evening has fallen and my yearnings have reached an end

ni mera chaḍ gaye kaag banera
The crows have flown from their perch above my wall

maape sab sahelaṛiyaan
My parents and all my friends

ni mainoon taa’nah dende tera
Taunt me with my love for you

ho panchhi wi muṛ gharaan noon aande
Even birds come home at the end of the day

kyoon chit naeen karda tera
So why does your heart not urge you to return?

aa sardaar wasa ja jhokaan
Come, my master, and make this dwelling flourish

kadi pa tatṛi wal phera
Come and see this miserable beggar sometime

kade aa ve maahi gal lag ve
Come sometime, beloved, and gather me to your heart

teri deed ghareebaan da hajj ve
Seeing you is the supreme pilgrimage for us poor beggars

haaye ve
Oh!

kade aa ve maahi gal lag ve
Come sometime, beloved, and gather me to your heart

teri deed ghareebaan da hajj ve
Seeing you is the supreme pilgrimage for us poor beggars

kade aa ve maahi gal lag ve
Come sometime, beloved, and gather me to your heart

saabat rakh pareet noon
Let love remain constant

kite pa watnaan wal phera
And come visit your home sometime

ho panchhi wi muṛ gharaan noon aande
Even birds come home at the end of the day

kyoon chit naeen karda tera
So why does your heart not urge you to return?

(sargam)

‘urfi to may-andesh ze ghaugha-i raqeebaan
Urfi, don’t worry about the uproar your rivals create

aawaaz-i sagaan kam nakunad rizq-i gada ra
The barking of dogs does not diminish the humble beggar’s daily bread

(sargam)

kade aa ve maahi gal lag ve
Come sometime, beloved, and gather me to your heart

teri deed ghareebaan da hajj ve
Seeing you is the supreme pilgrimage for us poor beggars

kade aa ve maahi gal lag ve
Come sometime, beloved, and gather me to your heart

nah main sohni nah gun palle
I’m not beautiful, nor have I any great virtues

nah main sohni nah gun palle
I’m not beautiful, nor have I any great virtues

mere ‘aib nimaani de kajj we
Please hide the flaws of this miserable wretch

kade aa ve maahi gal lag ve
Come sometime, beloved, and gather me to your heart

teri deed ghareebaan da hajj ve
Seeing you is the supreme pilgrimage for us poor beggars

kade aa ve maahi gal lag ve
Come sometime, beloved, and gather me to your heart

Javed Bashir to Tour India with Mekaal Hasan Band

A few hours ago, some photos of the Mekaal Hasan Band jamming with Javed Bashir were released on their official facebook page. We were glad to see him jamming with the band, but were also surprised, so we immediately contacted Javed Bashir’s manager, who confirmed us the news.

As of now, we don’t know for how long do they plan to work together, is it like a patch-up, or collaboration for project, all that we know is, Javed Bashir is working with MHB again. Also, we couldn’t speak directly to Javed Bashir because he was in a show, but his manager confirmed it.

Mekaal Hasan, Atif Aslam & Others Working with Indian Classical Singer Mahua Sen

What I really love about Mekaal Hasan Band is that despite the fact Mekaal is a rock and jazz guitar player, he keeps the eastern classical outfit in his songs. One such project is again in the pipeline that will feature an Indian classical singer “Mahua Sen” on the vocals probably in a collaboration with MHB’s 19 year old vocalist Asad Abbas, Atif Aslam and few other well-known names of the industry.

Mahua Sen is a visual artist, singer, songwriter, painter and a film maker. She defines her genre as classical/progressive. Though her homeland is New Delhi, India, she came to Lahore on a 2 weeks trip to meet friends and make music with ace Pakistani musicians. “The best thing about Lahore was the generosity of company.. returned back to Delhi after two weeks.. I left a huge part of myself behind” told Sen while expressing her stay at Lahore.
