Ali Zafar – Jhoom (KM Album Review)
By Hasan Faridi
It’s not about the King of Pop. It’s all about Pakistan’s Prince of Pop.
Ali Zafar first rose to real fame with his first album Huqa Pani (Shisha water?) in 2003, becoming a instant hit ending up selling around 600,000 copies worldwide and winning several major awards and nominations in the process. The artist then displayed the more mature side of him with the second album Masty (Fun) released in 2006. Looking at the album cover, the only thing that matured was his pecks. But it was an improvement nevertheless.
The new album, Jhoom starts a new chapter.
While focussing on his first love – Music, the Prince of Pop, Ali Zafar‘s first sufi album, ‘Jhoom‘ was recently released by Yash Raj Music in India and worldwide and by Ali’s own label Alif Records in Pakistan. Ali who is also shooting for his second feature film is all praise for his co-star Katrina Kaif, one of the reigning divas in Bollywood, as Ali is shooting with her and Imran Khan in ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan‘, a typical romantic comedy.
Ali Zafar told in an interview with TOI,
“The film is a romantic comedy, a very family kind of set-up. Imran and me play brothers. I’m a very charming and flamboyant guy in the film who is very confused about what he wants from life.”
“Both Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif are lovely people to work with. Not just the film, they make the whole experience of working in it very cherishable.”

He is recording the song with Baqir Abbas, the flute player who performed with Ali in Coke Studio, for his upcoming album titled ‘Jhoom‘. The album is in the final stages of mixing. This time he is mixing, arranging, recording, writing, playing keyboards and synthesizing everything by himself. Throwing out the blame
Internet. The inescapable term that has become an intrinsic part of our lives. We tweet through our phones; share pictures and at times send pointed (albeit indirect) messages to people on Facebook… and that is just one small example. According to the CIA Fact Book, Pakistan had an estimated 17.5 million internet users in the year 2009. So if music sales are going down at stores, which they very much are, we can guess that fans are downloading and sharing albums online instead.
YouTube is no longer just a medium where artists can share their content with the rest of the world. It is also a barometer of gauging public opinion. The latest example is Coke Studio. This season, YouTube is overloaded with Coke Studio content (despite an official website) and the two songs that have garnered enormous fame include Ali Zafar‘s ‘Dastaan-e-Ishq‘ and Noori and Saieen Zahoor‘s ‘Aik Alif‘. This is not to say that the rest of the singles were ordinary. Pretty much every tune was spectacular but some were more audibly stunning than others. And the numbers keep rising according to the varied views. When these numbers reached Ali Zafar, he was ecstatic.
