I’m not dismissing their earlier attempts, but Atif Aslam’s soulful tribute to Michael Jackson in the song Wasta-i-Pyar turned out to be an audio-cerebral treat. The way he weaved Billie Jean’s lines into the Punjabi number was refreshing and praiseworthy.
No one could’ve foreseen Michael Jackson’s death. As the new Coke Studio episode hit airwaves last Sunday, one heard Atif belt ‘Billie Jean’ while performing his own composition of ‘Wasta Pyar Da’. When Atif was recording this song, it was in March earlier this year and Michael Jackson was still alive. Three months later as the song went on air, Michael Jackson is no longer with us.
“I was humming ‘Billie Jean’ at Coke Studio and it went from there,” says Atif of fusing ‘Billie Jean’ into Coke Studio. “I’ve been a huge fan of Michael Jackson. His demise is an irreplaceable loss and this is my tribute to him,” Atif added.
The first two episodes of Coke Studio celebrated individuality and harmony. This week as the show returns with artists Ali Zafar, Zeb and Haniya with Javed Bashir, Noori, Josh and Atif Aslam, the third episode is called equality. Instep gives you a sneak peak…

Ustaad M Jumman’s ‘Yaar Dhadee’, which reminds one of our rural deserts, gets a resurrection that is stunning and surprising. It brings together Ali Zafar with Baqir Abbas and, one part of the Noori brothers, Ali Hamza alongside the Coke Studio house band.
“I chose ‘Yaar Dhadee’ because I wanted to introduce our youth to the great treasures of our music. The music of this soil and its people and make them realize what they’ve been missing out on. It’s my tribute to Jumman Khan.
