It’s amazing that our celebrities have such a diverse taste in music. From chartbusters to fresh music, their playlist depicts their mood. Instep takes you on a trip through their world of music
“I love Pearl Jam. Their new album is great, and I watched The Boat That Rocked. The soundtrack is good.”
Pearl Jam is an American rock band that has been around since the mid nineties. Fronted by Eddie Vedder, the band has a distinct grunge tone, distinct mainly because of Eddie Vedder’s vocals. They recently released their new album Backspacer, which debuted at the top of the Billboard charts.
The Boat that Rocked is movie about the 1960’s Pirate Radio and has an old, old school soundtrack… something our parents would enjoy. It features songs from iconic artists like The Beach Boys, Cat Stevens, The Kinks, and The Who, Dusty Springfield, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie. These are the artists that paved the way for today’s music as we know it.
Rabia Butt:
“I listen to all kinds of music, old classic music mainly, and singers like Enrique Iglesias, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Amanat Ali and Celine Dion.”
Well, Enrique might not be classic but his father Julio Iglesies definitely was. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is practically our national symbol of musical art. The man was a genius at what he did and he was internationally recognised and is held in high regard world over. Nusrat has also done tracks with Bruce Springsteen, Michael Brook and Eddie Vedder. Celine Dion is a Canadian singer-songwriter with a very powerful voice. She was mainly famous in the ’80s and early ’90s. Her song ‘My Heart Will Go On’, which was used for the soundtrack of the Titanic, gained her the most recognition (and an Oscar) at least in Pakistan.
Nomi Ansari:
“I haven’t been in touch with music lately, but I like the new Mekaal Hasan song and beside that I listen to Indian classics like Kishore and Lata Mangeskar.”
Mekaal Hasan Band rose to success after Pepsi’s Battle of the Bands and have been making waves in our local rock scene. Their music is a fusion of classical with new age rock. It’s mellow and great to kick back to. MHB’S new song ‘Chal Bulleya‘ is based on Bulley Shah’s kaafi and has a splendid, all-star cast video. The late Kishore Kumar is an Indian singer whose music remains legendary ; Ali Zafar‘s voice is uncannily similar to his. Lata Mangeshkar is the sister of acclaimed singer Asha Bhosle, and has sung songs for over a thousand Indian films. Lata’s career rose in the 1950s and she remains an icon today.
Mekaal Hasan:
“When I listen to something, I listen to it properly. For the last eight months I’ve been listening to Porcupine Tree.”
Porcupine Tree were formed around the late 1980s, and are basically a rock band, but their music is also very progressive and in a way psychedelic. Their performances are also an experience with their literal display of their music. The band also has their own record label (even though their signed with other labels) called Transmission, which they use to release special editions of songs. They also are Grammy nominees for their album Fear of a Black Planet.
