Ni Oothaan Waale – Attaullah Khan Essa Khailwi (Coke Studio Season 4 Audio / Video)

Song Review:

Attaullah Khan Esakhelvi’s “Ni Oothaan Waale” is the quintessential folk song. In this boldly experimental rendition, Coke Studio embraces the traditional melody, redefines the groove and offsets the combination with a catchy and brazenly contemporary riff. Within this calculated contrast of the arrangement lies the key to the fusion of east and west, traditional and contemporary. And at the very centre of this musical balancing act, in the magic of Esakhelvi’s timeless voice, the soul of indigenous folk music lives on – preserving the age-old tradition of storytelling through song, in this poignant retelling of the tragic tale of the mythical lovers, Sassi and Punno.

Lyrics

Title: Ni Ooṭhaan Waale – نی اوٹھاں والے – The Camel-riders

Language: Punjabi, Siraiki

Poetry: Bari Nizami (d. 1998) and others

Against the backdrop of the tale of Sassi and Punnun, the poet makes a mystical, poetic statement – warning of the tragic consequences of the smallest measure of complacency on the Path of Love, which is fraught with danger and deception.

ni ishq de pichchhe nah po sassiye

after love don’t hanker, Sassi

ni tu chaḍ de ishq da kheṛa

just renounce love completely

ni baalaan waangar zid nah kar tu

don’t be childishly insistent

ishq da raah e bhaiṛa

the path of love is wretched

sikhar dupahraan wa wirole

like whirlwinds at hottest noon

te maaru thal de painḍe

and treks through the deadly Maru Thal desert

bari nizaami kahn siyaane

O “Bari Nizami”, the wise say that

ishq da rog aweṛa

the malady of love is wayward

ni ooṭhaan waale ṭur jaan ge

the camel-riders will set off

fer labhdi phiren gi haani

then you’ll rove in desperate search of your mate

sassiye jaag di raeen

O Sassi, keep watchful and awake

raat aj di neend nah maaneen

this night, don’t delight in slumber

ni ooṭhaan waale ṭur jaan ge

the camel-riders will set off

pair pair te pain bhulekhe

on every step are doubts and illusions

e hai ishq duwaara

this is the threshold of love

tu alhaṛ muṭyaar ayaaneen

you’re a sprightly, naive maiden

tera roop kuwaara

chaste and pure is your beauty

ni phullaan jae mukhṛe te

that flower-like face of yours

kitte sikhr dopahr nah taaneen

don’t let it be overcast by the noon sun

ni sassiye jaag di raeen

O Sassi, keep watchful and awake

raat aj di neend nah maaneen

this night, don’t delight in slumber

ni ooṭhaan waale ṭur jaan ge

the camel-riders will set off

wich chanaan de sohani ḍub gai

Sohni drowned in the Chenab river

raat kabaabaan waali

the night Mahiwal roasted his own flesh for her

tere naal wi inj na howe

may you not endure the same

raat sharaabaan waali

the night Punnun was plied with wine

ni wela gaya hath na aawe

a lost moment can’t be recaptured

toon wela aap pachhaaneen

you should know the worth of this moment

ni sassiye jaag di raeen

O Sassi, keep watchful and awake

raat aj di neend nah maaneen

this night, don’t delight in slumber

ni ooṭhaan waale ṭur jaan ge

the camel-riders will set off

ishq di raahon khunje jehṛe

on the paths of love, those who lose their way

painde lamyaan waaṭaan

must cover long distances

maran teek nah magron lahandiyaan

not till death can one free oneself

ishq diyaan e chaaṭaan

these are the blows rained down by love

ni cham cham badlaan waangoon

like great splashing clouds of rain

kitte akhyaan chon was pae naan paaneen

may your eyes not flood with tears

ni sassiye jaagdi raeen

O Sassi, stay wide awake

raat aj di neend nah maaneen

this night, don’t delight in slumber

ni ooṭhaan waale ṭur jaan ge

the camel-riders will set off

kul balaain jangal deeyaan

all the fiendish scavengers of the forest

aa laash sassi te gaiyyaan

gathered at Sassi’s corpse

ḍekh te laash sassi di noon

upon seeing the corpse of Sassi

hairaan khalotiyaan raiyyaan

they were left astonished

sassi aakhiya beshak khaao maikoon

Sassi said, “Go on and consume me”

main taan daawat ḍaindi paiyyaan

I readily invite you to do so

par ḍu akkhiyaan meḍiyaan mahfooz rakhaae

but please keep safe these two eyes of mine

raah kech da ḍehdiyaan paiyyaan

towards Punnun’s Kech are they turned expectantly

ni ooṭhaan waale ṭur jaan ge

the camel-riders will set off
