Koolmuzone Music Blockbusters of 2009: Top 5 Videos

By

Sadaf Fayyaz

1. Chal Bulleya (Mekaal Hasan Band)

The title song of Album Saptak, the theme comprises of seven cardinal sins. Directed by Bilal Lashari, and wardrobe by Ammar Bilal, the theme goes parallel with the beautiful poetry of Bulleh Shah. The seven cardinal sins concept is depicted well, with an exotically novel idea. Apart from conventional love stories message, the video is riveting.

2. Tanha Hai Kyun (Ali Azmat; Klashanfolk)

Zeeshan Perwez comes up with a brilliant attempt for the second video from the album. With rocking video and haunting vocals, it gets the second rank.

3. Az Chashm Saqi (Hadiqa Kiani: Aasmaan)

With beautiful and mesmerizing Persian poetry of Allama Iqbal, with clips of Iqbal’s life at different places, Hadiqa’s outrageous wardrobe and styling add a graceful glitziness to the video. Produced by Mian Salahuddin, the English translation and B & W theme add more poise to the revolutionary poetry, penned by Iqbal.

4. Titliyan (Strings)

Paying the tribute to some the lost gems of Pakistan, Strings have come up with something old, in a new style. The highly emotive opening verses in the start do a fabulous job of an introductory session, of describing what the song is about.  Marvelously directed by Soheb Akhtar, The song from their album “Koi Aanay Wala Hey” is a very beguiling tribute to some of the legends we lost. The B&W adds an archetypical tinge to the video.

5. Khuda Zameen se Gaya Nahi (Rahat Fateh Ali Khan)

The beautiful vocals of Rahat add melancholic touch to the video. English translation, rich on the feelings of nationalism, sacrifice, heroism and fighting spirit, the serial depicts the exploitation of youth by militants converting them into suicide bombers. It also exhibits the distress of demolition of human psyche and relationships in wake of uncontrolled terrorism in country in a pragmatic manner. It can’t be called a video exactly, but a beautiful compilation of some of the shots of the drama.

Paying tribute and doing it right Strings – ‘Titliyan’

Strings-1The ‘Titliyan‘ video is undoubtedly one of the most poignant videos to have been released this year. The song itself gained a new lease of life this summer via the reworked version for Coke Studio’s second season. But this newly released video will definitely compel fans of Strings to revisit the original on the 2008 album.

The video itself is a fitting tribute to Pakistani icons that have passed away – some long forgotten and scarcely remembered, and others, who have left us so recently that the shock of their departure hasn’t settled in yet.

Bilal Maqsood of Strings: “‘Titliyan’ video set to release after Eid.”

SB_Strings‘Koi Aanay Wala Hai’ had angels flying and beautiful skyscrapers, ‘Humsafar’ took Strings out to Moscow and carries a signature of mystery while ‘Jago’ shed light on the underdog and the vigour to fight back. Before these outstanding videos, there was ‘Aakhri Alvida’ which was shot on the sets of Shootout at Lokhandwala and ‘Yeh Hai Meri Kahani’ that brought Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham inside a studio together for the first time, even if it Sanju Baba or John weren’t singing. They were adding star power and a whole lot of fun. Now Strings are coming back with ‘Titliyan’ – another video from their last record.
